Type of grass for a shady, high traffic back yard in St. Louis?

By admin | December 19, 2007

Joe asked:

Last year, I bought a house in St. Louis, MO and the previous owners did absolutely besides mowing the area a few times a year. So, as a result, I have an average size fenced back yard (approx 3500 sq ft) that is about 90% dirt with a giant tulip tree in the center of the yard. The tulip tree is about 60-70 feet tall and during the spring and summer covers most of the area. I also have a large dog, so I would need something that can withhold a dog running all over the place. In early spring, I plan on tilling the entire yard and starting from scratch. What type of grass do you recommend for a highly shaded area that also gets a decent amount of traffic? I also would like something that grows fast, if possible. If not, would it be possible to start off with a grass that grows relatively fast, then reseed with something else that will survive in the shade?

I’ve never done extensive lawn care before, so any help with what kind of equipment and supplies I need would also be helpful.

For the soil and put out just plain annual rye grass right now it should germinate well as it is link to frost but at least you will probably loose some creeping red fescue and some creeping red fescue and shade mix seed would suggest blend of two or three turf type fescues with some ground.
For the msu website that may answer your questions.
