The same oil you use in your car in your mower do and have never had problem.

For lawnmowers however sure hope your not talking about 2cycle engine how ever.

You can use anything you want really. A straight 30W is probably recommended, but 20W-40W is fine. To be honest, I change oil once a season…cheapest one.
